If you raise your own chickens at home, it would be a good idea to make a chicken coop for them. Because of their relatively small size, bantams are exposed to predators such as cats, dogs, large rats, raccoons etc. The house will keep the predators away and also shelter your poultry from the weather. If you are good with hand tools, you can build your own chicken run via Do It Yourself (DIY) approach.

A custom made chicken coop is much better than a ready made one. You can build in all the features to meet your requirements. One feature that you should focus on is the nesting boxes. Hens will lay eggs more often when they feel comfortable, safe and secure. Having their own nesting box will help them to do that.

There is no fixed dimension for the boxes. Just make sure it fit an average hen when she crouches down to brood. More important is the filler material for the nesting box. You want to use material which is dry, clean, retains heat and has good ventilation. Using a pile of dry grass or wood chipping will do just fine.

Most people will make the nesting box out of wood panels. If you have the budget, go for plastic building material. Plastic is much easier to clean hence less trouble for you. Finally, when you make the side panels of the chicken coop, make sure to include a small door near the nesting boxes. This will make it easier for you to retrieve the eggs. Good preliminary planning is the key to a good chicken run design.
